The 2012 Southern Tier Scholastic Science Fair will be held on Saturday, March 17th. We realize that this is the same day as the Ying TRSEF in Syracuse and that students will not be able to compete in both fairs. We regret the conflict but remain committed to supporting local middle and high school student projects at our community fair! We look forward to a great day of science, fun and prizes and hope to see you there. Please check back on February 1st for updated forms.

2011 STSSF Workshops

Ever wonder what it is like to be a “rocket scientist”? This year, STSSF participants will have the opportunity to participate in one of two fascinating workshops designed to give students some insight into tho world of physical science.

Crystal Growth Workshop. As part of this workshop, we will imitate the environmental conditions suitable to promote the formation of several simple chemical compounds in crystalline form. We will use binocular microscopes to observe the crystal growth. We will also discuss natural environments in which crystal formation occurs.
Light and Spectra Workshop. What is light? White light from the Sun actually includes all the colors of the rainbow. In this workshop we will look at different sources of light and discuss how the type of light we observe is based upon what materials make up the light source, including the chemical makeup of the Sun.

The workshops will be lead by faculty from the BCC Engineering Science, Physics and Physical Science Departments.

Super Science from the 2010 STSSF

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2010 Southern Tier Science Fair! We had another great fair with 66 students competing for bronze, gold and silver medals along with nearly $2000 worth of prizes (which included a fossilized bison ankle bone!) and the chance to move on to the TriRegion Science and Engineering Fair and the Science Teachers Association of NY Science Congress.

When they weren’t meeting with the judges, students had the opportunity to participate in this year’s science fair workshop called “Animal Adaptations”. Teams of students (Firenze’s Flying Foxes, Hollister’s Harelip Suckers and Demetros’ Dodos) studied the skeletons of an arborial quadraped (AKA, a tree monkey) and a terrestrial biped (AKA, a human) and discussed what was different about the two specimens. The teams presented their “research report” about the special adaptations of these two organisms to the entire group. After an unbiased vote from the parents, students on the winning team were entered into a drawing to win a great prize that was just perfect for a terrestrial biped with an iPod. Thanks to Dr. Richard Firenze, Dr. Bill Hollister and Professor Mark Demetros for presenting this year’s workshop.

We wish to thank the many individuals who generously volunteered their time and resources to make the fair a success. Thanks to the many community members who served as judges, gave presentations and worked behind the scenes at the fair. We would also like to thank our major sponsors, Broome Community College, Sigma Xi, CNYAHEC, VMR Electronics and Lockheed Martin for their generous support. Finally, thanks to the teachers and students whose hard work and creativity makes the STSSF such a wonderful event!

STSSF 2010, and beyond….

Did you know that by participating in the STSSF you might be recommended by our judges to move on to participate in the Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair (Ying TRSEF) to be held on March 20-21, 2010 at Onondaga Community College?

The Ying TRSEF serves middle and high school students in 27 counties across northern, western and southern New York and is your regional fair in Syracuse. You can join middle and high school students for a day immersed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as judges ask Research Students about their experiments, and Poster Presenters about their selected topic.

Why do this? You will adventure into a field you choose, even work with a mentor as you explore your topic. Plus advancement to international and other competitions and dozens of other awards wait for you.

STSSF has reserved spots at the 2010 Ying TRSEF for participants who are recommended by the judges tomove on. For your convenience, there will be a TRSEF representitive at the 2010 STSSF to register eligible students on site.
