It was a great day at the 2013 STSSF! Thanks to all of the students, teachers, parents, sponsors and volunteers who made the 2013 Southern Tier Scholastic Science Fair a success! It was our biggest fair ever with lots of great science and really amazing projects. (And we managed to eat 608 pieces of pizza.)

2013 STSSF Workshop and Activities

We have some great things planned for you at the 2013 STSSF!

When you are not meeting with the judges, you can take part in our workshop entitled: “What You Know That Isn’t So: An Exploration of Discrepant Events in Science.” Are you wondering what a discrepant event is? Check out these videos for some examples:

Then, while the judges are reviewing their results (and you are enjoying some pizza), you can take part in any or all of the following activities:

Whatever the weather! Depending on weather conditions, come launch a weather balloon or take microphotography of snowflakes or learn about microclimates around the campus. Location: Quad outside Applied Technology Building
Back by popular demand! Waterman Conservation Education Center will have Birds of Prey for an up close and informative presentation on all things related to Raptors. Location: AT117
Solar Astronomy: Use a filtered telescope to safely view the surface of the sun. Location: Outside between Decker and Applied Technology Buildings

We have new awards and new prizes and we look forward to seeing your science projects at the fair. Please be sure to try to get your registration in by February 18th!

The 2013 STSSF Workshop

Hello, Science Students! The 2013 STSSF will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at BCC. This year students will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop entitled: “What You Know That Isn’t So: An Exploration of Discrepant Events in Science.”

The workshop will be led by Dr. Tracy Curtis from the Biology Department at Broome Community College. A discrepant event is one that surprises and puzzles the observer. A discrepant event is unexpected and does not usually seem to follow the rules of science. At this workshop you will have the opportunity to use your problem-solving and critical thinking skills to discover the reasons for some discrepant events.

We have lots of other great things planned for you and, of course, you will have the chance to tell our judges about your science project! Please be sure to get your registration in by February 18th. We look forward to seeing you on March 2nd!

It is time to start working on your project for the 2013 STSSF! The fair will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Broome Community College. The STSSF Committee is working on designing some great activities and workshops for you and we can’t wait to see your projects.

Registration forms are now available and must be submitted by Monday, February 18th. Please check back in January 2013 for more information about what you can expect at the 2013 STSSF!

There were raptors! There were weather balloons! There was a lot of pizza! There was emergency medicine (but just for demonstration)! And….there were some amazing science projects! The 2012 Southern Tier Scholastic Science Fair was a fun day for all involved. Thanks again to everyone who volunteered at the fair and to all of the students and parents who attended. Thanks to our generous sponsors who make this event possible and a very special thank you to Dr. Andrea Wade for her ten years of leadership and dedication. STSSF and beyond……..

The 2012 STSSF is fast approaching! Some projects at the STSSF will be selected by the judges for advancement to regional competition. Students advanced to Regional Level will have the opportunity to compete Sunday March 18^th at the Ying TRSEF in Syracuse. Yes, that’s right, you may be able to make it a whole weekend of science! Students who wish to take advantage of this opportunity will be able to put their display in the free Ying TRSEF van (after the STSSF on Saturday) for transport to Syracuse, set-up and approval. STSSF students who have advanced to the TRSEF will need to be at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 18^th. The TRSEF Awards Ceremony should be done by 6:00 p.m. Additional details will be provided with your Advancement Certificate presented at the STSSF. The STSSF volunteers are excited to see you and your science projects on the 17th! We are looking forward to a great day at the 10th annual STSSF!

Pizza, Weather Balloons, Engineering at BU and Raptors

What do all of these things have in common? They will all be available during the lunch break at the 2012 STSSF. So, while you are waiting for the awards to be finalized, grab a slice of pizza and visit some of the exciting activities that will be available for you!

Come learn how Meteorologists use balloons to study the lower atmosphere and have the opportunity to view a balloon launch (weather permitting). This presentation will run three times starting at approximately 12:00PM, 12:30PM, and 1:00PM. Location: Quad outside Applied Technology Building.
James M. Pitarresi, Ph.D will give a presentation about the new engineering building on the BU campus and also highlight some of the innovative research going on at the Watson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. This presentation will run twice starting at approximately 12:15PM and 12:45PM. Location: AT200

2012 STSSF Workshop: The Emergency Experience

Are you prepared for an emergency? Have you ever thought about a career in emergency medicine? This year at the 2012 STSSF, take part in a workshop where you will learn some basic first aid and have an up close look at the type of training that is needed to be a “critical care” expert. The workshop will be led by Sid Peake, who has over twenty years of experience as a New York State Critical Care EMT and is a Deputy Coordinator with the Broome County Office of Emergency Management. At the workshop, you will learn how to stay safe by being aware and avoiding dangerous situations, and how you can help others in an emergency by knowing what to do and who to call. Sid and his volunteers will also demonstrate and discuss more advanced procedures pertaining to respiration, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. We hope you will join us for this exciting and informative “emergency experience”.
